About us

We are a selection of Methodist Church in and around Tavistock.

Tavistock is an historic town which is situated on the western side of Dartmoor. It was a Stannary Town which meant is was very important in the historic Tin Mining of the region. Here Tin was traded.

It was also once famous for its Abbey, the ruins of which can still be seen. It is believed that this is the place where the Cream Tea was invented. The Abbey needed something to feed its many visitors with and they chose to serve a tuft (a Devon bread roll, split in half with cream and jam.

Methodism has been strong in the area with many small chapels serving the mining communities that were once abundent in the area.

We, as a Circuit, are proud of those Methodists who did so much to promote the Christian faith in this area, our heritage and roots are important. However, we are aware that we need to be relevant in a very different world and just like our ancestors we strive to be faithful to biblical and historical Christianity whilst being relevant in a modern world.
